ALPHARETTA, GEORGIA — Steve Beecham, the president of Home Town Mortgage in Alpharetta, GA, has announced the publication of Bass-Ackward Business: The Power of Helping Without Hustling (Home Town Marketing, 2009). The book grew out of Beecham’s unique approach to doing business in what he calls a “bass-ackward way.”

“Most business owners, professionals and salespeople approach relationships from a prospecting perspective,” says Beecham. “Everyone they meet is viewed either as a potential prospect or someone who can maybe introduce them to a prospect. And every interaction and relationship boils down to ‘if you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.’”

Beecham says that when he first went into business for himself 25 years ago, “this was my modus operandi. I was all about networking, meeting and greeting, glad-handing—anything to make sure people knew who I was and how they could hire me.”

But it didn’t take him long to see that this was how everybody else also operated, and there was nothing about this approach that would set him apart from the crowd. “So I started searching for a better approach—one that didn’t require constantly hustling to try to convince people how great I was.”

Here’s what he found: Instead of approaching every contact thinking ‘What’s in it for me?’ it was better to approach them thinking ‘How can I help this person?’ “This is a totally bass-ackward way of thinking that has never occurred to most people,” he says.

Since adopting this bass-ackward approach to business, Beecham has enjoyed professional success beyond his wildest dreams. Home Town Mortgage is consistently listed among the top 10 mortgage firms in Georgia by the Georgia Association of Mortgage Brokers and Steve is regularly recognized as one of the top mortgage brokers in the country.

“When you take a ‘help-without-hustling’ approach to relationships, people feel compelled to help you in return,” he says. “When you show sincere interest in helping others grow their business or reach their personal goals, it will come back to you many times over.”
